New in Creo Elements/View 10.0 MCAD Professional

Creo Elements/View 10.0 MCAD Professional is now available. This new release has many enhancements and additions that are guaranteed to bring attention to your next design review. In this article, we will take a look at some of the more significant upgrades.

 

User Interface

 

The first thing you will notice is the new user interface skin that gives Creo Elements/View MCAD Professional a fresh look (Figure 1). The ProductView Menu that was present in version 9.1 has been replaced by the File tab and there are a few more ribbons (tabs) on the interface as more functionality has been added. These ribbons in Creo Elements/View MCAD Professional are intuitive and are a very efficient way to organize the commands.

Select Assemblies

 

Selecting an assembly or subassembly will automatically select all the components within that node (Figure 2). It will also appear in an orange color when selected. There is no longer a need to use the Select Children function as in version 9.1.

Precise Translation and Rotation

 

There are now three ways to translate or rotate a component with precision:

 

  • Use The Onscreen Distance Measurement. When translating and rotating components, the value is now displayed while dragging (Figure 3). This will allow you to get a better feel for the position of the component when creating an exploded view.
  • Type In The Value While Dragging. While translating or rotating, you can enter in an exact numerical value. The key here is to type in the value and press the [ENTER] key while you are still holding down the cursor for the drag.

  • Use The Ruler. You can also hold the [CTRL] key and a ruler will be displayed (Figure 4). The translation or rotation will “snap” to the Increment Defaults that you have specified using File > Creo Element/View Options > Model category. This is a slick way to translate in 1.00” increments or rotate in 15° increments.

Assemble Function

 

If you need to precisely reposition one component relative to another, the new Assemble function on the Tools tab will be very useful. Essentially, selected components are assembled using a method similar to coordinate system placement.

 

Let’s deep dive into this further to learn more about the workflow for this useful function:

 

  • Initiate the Assemble function. The Assemble ribbon will appear (Figure 5).

  • Select the component(s) to be repositioned and click Add Selected.
  • Define the Origin CSYS on the component(s) that will be repositioned and the Destination CSYS at a location where the component(s) will be moved or oriented to. You can use a construction CSYS or one that was published into the models from the CAD application. However, you are not required to select a CSYS for placement. You can simply select the endpoint or midpoint of an edge, the center of an arc edge, vertex, published Datum Point or a construction point and the system will place the Destination or Origin CSYS at that location (Figure 6).

  • At this point, you can Preview the placement. The Locate option will bring the CSYS origins together, but leave them oriented as they were originally. The Orient option will leave the components in their original location, but orient the X-Y-Z of the CSYS togehter. The Mate option will locate and orient the components.
  • You can also enter X,Y and Z offset values and/or angular rotation values to further control the position.
  • Click OK to finish.

 

Although this is a different assembly method than you use in Creo Elements/Pro, it is a quick technique and should be easy to understand for users without a CAD background. Where would the Assemble function be used? Well, if you are manually building the assembly structure or trying out different design variations or performing “ad hoc” Clipboard work in Windchill PDMLink to name a few. In these cases, this will be a critical function to completing the tasks efficiently.

 

Capture Location

 

When this function is used, it will set the current location of the selected components or all components as the “default” location for the active Annotation Set. This means you can click Restore Location and components will return to this “captured” location and not the original location. This will prove very useful when creating exploded views or repositioning components.

 

BOM Function

 

This new function allows you to generate a Bill of Material for the assembly. It is displayed in the Horizontal Panel formatted with column information of your choosing. You can also export the BOM as a CSV or HTML file.

Gesture Navigation

 

This is a continuous spin function. It can be enabled or disabled using File > Creo Elements/View Options > Active View > Model category > Enable gesture navigation.

 

New Add-Ons

 

There are several new add-on modules for Creo Elements/View MCAD Professional 10.0 that can provide tremendous value to the design process.

 

  • Animations. This is a new module for creating key frame animations of your assemblies. It is very easy to learn and has many improvements over the animator that was present in ProductView 9.0 Realizer. The ability to split and merge tracks, add fade in/out effects with the push of one button, easily key frame sectioning and annotations is awesome.

  • Interference Analysis. This module is used to indentify, display and analyze interfering components in the assembly.
  • API Toolkits. These will allow the Creo Elements/View MCAD Professional models to be embedded inside of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, web pages or java based applications.

 

Summary

 

The changes and additions in Creo Elements/View 10.0 MCAD Professional will prove very useful for current users and allow you to expand its usage into new areas. The enhancement for selecting entire subassemblies and the enhancements for precise component translation, rotation and assembling are examples of changes that will improve the efficiency of commonly performed tasks. Also, the add-ons for animations and interference checking can be used to produce new information without having to use the native CAD tool. Finally, the ability to embed Creo Elements/View models, drawings, Annotation Sets and animations into Office applications, web pages or custom apps will make it possible to integrate your CAD data into other areas of your organization. These items and many more make Creo Elements/View 10.0 Professional MCAD a very nice investment for your company.
