Mathematical calculations are the basis for design decisions at nearly every stage of the product lifecycle. By providing an intuitive, interactive and self-documenting method of performing engineering calculations, Mathcad has become an industry standard tool with millions of users in engineering organizations around the world.

Mathcad Prime 1.0 takes this concept to the next level by providing a redesigned, more intuitive task-based interface that enables engineers to spend more time engineering and less time documenting. Mathcad Prime also improves units support and provides a higher level of integration with other PTC products to enable better collaboration between individuals and groups.

The Mathcad interface is simply standard math notation that is understood by every engineer so you don’t need to know Mathcad to understand Mathcad documents. The formulas in these documents are interactive so the results always match the formula and data in the document. This approach makes Mathcad worksheets self-documenting. There is no need to go into cells to check that formulas are correct.

A very important feature of Mathcad is that the software intelligently keeps track of units. Engineers can enter data in whatever units are available and the software will automatically make the necessary conversions. For example, Mathcad ensures that all of your equations and symbols combine together to produce a force, and not a pressure, a force density, or some meaningless combination of units.

The new Mathcad Prime interface should allow you to become comfortable and productive within 15 minutes of beginning to use the product. A task ribbon similar to the one used in Microsoft Office and many other Windows software packages increases the discoverability of features and functions, enables quicker learning of the program as a whole, and makes you feel more in control of their experience.

Mathcad Prime provides a major improvement in the way you produce documents for review or archiving. In the past, the interface looked like a whiteboard without margins so you could easily pass print boundaries without ever knowing it. Mathcad Prime clearly indicates print margins so you can see exactly where you are on the page and format documents for printing without having to go back forth between the editor and print preview mode. You also have the option of working in the traditional whiteboard mode.

**Design of Experiments.** A new Design of Experiments (DoE) capability helps optimize the design to a higher level while actually reducing the number of required physical or virtual experiments. DoE enables you to simultaneously evaluate the effects of all the factors involved in the design and provides statistical analysis that helps separate the single factor and multiple factor effects. You can optimize the values of each factor, regardless of whether or not an experiment was ever run with the optimal values.

Mathcad Prime also provides a significant improvement in Mathcad’s already powerful support for engineering units by elegantly handling the situation where the same symbol represents two different units. For example, “m” might represent a variable in an equation and also serve as the abbreviation for meters. In this situation, Mathcad Prime maintains the rigor of the units and presents the different versions of “m” in different colors so they can easily be distinguished.

**Advanced Collaboration Capabilities.** Mathcad Prime also carries collaboration to a higher level than previous versions. The new version has a more modular design that integrates much more tightly into PTC’s product development system. Mathcad worksheets can be intelligently managed in Windchill throughout their entire lifecycle, enabling a variety of collaborative product data management capabilities. Mathcad content can also be managed in SharePoint and worksheet associations can be created in Windchill ProductPoint. Mathcad also integrates with CAD software and CAE tools such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Mathcad Prime enables organizations to leverage` and reuse existing documents created in older versions of Mathcad, providing full backwards compatibility with worksheets saved in previous versions back to 7.0. The converter provides a summary of each worksheet brought into the application and flags any compatibility issues where functionality is not matched.

**User Feedback.** Martin Van Wyck, Project Manager for Metallurgical Processing and Bureau Veritas, was one of the beta testers for Mathcad Prime. “The tutorials are simply brilliant,” Van Wyck says. “They are easy to follow and quickly invoke relevant software capabilities. The new matrix selection and setup is vastly superior to the previous Mathcad releases. The software is easy to use, user-friendly and intuitive. The plotting and graphing is also brilliant.”

Mathcad Prime 1.0, the next generation of Mathcad, is completely re-designed with an intuitive task-based interface that makes the software even easier to learn. Its document-centric calculation environment makes it possible to display, manipulate, analyze and plot data with full units support to quickly and easily create professional engineering design documents.
