Today's exercises in video conversion remind me of the browser wars in the 1990s. There is no end to the pain of figuring out formats that will play well in everyone's browser on everyone's OS. Especially if you want to host the videos yourself. When you do as many videos as we do, here at Single-Sourcing Solutions, it starts to become impossible.

In order to make it simpler, we decided to post all our old videos to YouTube, which means that we recently launched several YouTube Channels:

  1. Arbortext Monster Garage - all the videos from our famed web series about how to trick out your Arbortext environment, software, and publishing deliverables
  2. Single-Sourcing Solutions - these videos may not be Arbortext-specific, but depict related content to the work of authors, publishers, managers, and support personnel.
  3. TC Dojo - this is a mix of Arbortext Monster Garage and TC Camp. Videos are recordings of sessions where the topics were voted on by the community. The TC Dojo YouTube channel has copies of all the TC Dojo open session recordings. Again, not Arbortext-specific, but all related content.
  4. Arbortext PTC/User Group - These videos are moving to YouTube as well, so we don't have to manage the AUG website. The group was hard to maintain, but the dedicated volunteers are still out there and the content from the meetings we did have is incredible. YouTube will preserve the content for us.

What about TC Dojo: Arbortext Edition?

TC Dojo has been such a popular series, we added TC Dojo Arbortext Edition. The Arbortext TC Dojo videos are not on YouTube. They are only available to TC Dojo Master Series members and our customers. The live Arbortext Dojo sessions are free to attend in person. If you attend, learn, and enjoy, but if you want access to the recordings, join the Master Series

Abstract:

If you have  information about your company’s product or services  that needs to be  delivered to customers, whether it’s in print or  electronic form,  chances are you have heard of XML.

Are you finding yourself in the position of having to explain to others or have you wondered:

  • What’s all the big deal about XML?
  • Why should I care?
  • What’s in it for me?
  • How is it going to save me time?
  • How will I lower cost?

Then come and listen to our expert panel of industry leaders as they   share with you a bit of their journey and what the true ROI is of XML.   Experts from Hewlett-Packard, Medtronic, Nortel, and Toro.

No matter how large or small, how new or how old your company is or   what technology or service your company provides XML can have   significant returns for you in:

  • Reuse content for faster delivery of information
  • Separation of form and content (your writers can  write rather than try to tweak with documents to get them to look right)
  • Ability to deliver information in the language and format of choice
  • Utilize resources more effectively to help you meet  your deliverables/Do more with less/Improve time to market/Productivity

Who should attend?

  • Business leaders who are interested in gaining a competitive edge by improving product information.
  • Content creators who are trying to help their management understand the need for change.
  • Executives with P&L responsibility who need to drive to a greater ROI.

No time to attend? Sign up anyway so you can access the recording later.

As always, members and customers of Single-Sourcing Solutions will be able to access the video, slides, and transcript on the membership site.

Events coming up...

Posted by ptc-1892082 Aug 26, 2010

Check the Arbortext PTC/User Group page for a list of upcoming virtual meetings and webinars. Lots of good product information, tips, and feature-focus sessions headed our way.

Here's a short list:

  • August 28    User Meeting: Deploying and maintaining a large single-sourcing solution: Now what?

This is going to be a great one. I've known the speaker for a while and even did a podcast with him. He's an long-time Arbortext customer who has done a lot of really interesting things over the years. However, one of the best things we can all learn from him is what it takes to deploy an Arbortext-style dynamic publishing system for a major company. At it's peak, his team of seven was managing the system for 700 writing staff. He was there in the beginning when they proposed the system to management and he's there today, 10 years later. It's going to be a great presentation!

  • August 31    Webinar: DITA Style in Arbortext. It's Easy!

I'm giving this one. We're going to show some best practices of doing DITA stylesheets in Styler. Understanding fall-back processing, using read-only stylesheets, modular stylesheet development. All of these contribute to a successful DITA implementation and a productive environment.

  • September 23    Webinar: ROI of XML

Want to know why you implement an XML publishing system? Missed the user meeting on August 28th? Hear from some long time experts about why they did it and what it took to sell it to the executive suite. Panelists include: Greg Johnson/Medtronic, Todd Nowlan/Canadian Telecom, Charlotte Robidoux/HP, and Andy Pieper/Toro.

  • September 25    User Meeting: Building the future of technical publishing with MathFlow, MathType, and MathML

Doing Math in XML has not always been the easiest thing to do. The tools from Design Science have been the canonical way for doing it for decades. They know Math; they know XML; and, they know how they fit together. In this presentation, you'll hear about how to take advantage of the maturation of the traditional XML standards framework, as well as how to put yourself in a position to get out in front of emerging trends.

  • October 23    User Meeting: An ACL Tool to Find and Replace XML Attribute Values

This presentation by Todd Hicks, from Wolters Kluwer, was originally given at PTC/User in 2008. Todd is well known throughout the user community for building tools to help his writers be ever more efficent, ever more productive in Arbortext. In this presentation, he describes one of the tools he built to improve user productivity and what he did to make it happen. This is a great presentation and one not to miss!

  • October 26    Webinar: "Under-the-hood with Multimedia publishing"

Details coming soon. Jean Kaplansky from PTC and I will be showing what you can do with DMP. We're output geeks and currently playing with things interesting technology like ePub, HTML5, CSS3... stay tuned!

That's the list folks.. Lots of stuff coming over the next few months. Sign up soon to guarantee your seat or at least guarantee you get a copy of the web session to view later!

NOTE:

  • If you miss a User Meeting, the video recordings are usually posted to the site within a few days. Check the site or RSS feed for video post notices.
